Revenue and tax treatment

Recognized revenue always excludes pass-through tax. If your price includes tax, this tool backs it out before calculating fees and profit; if tax is added on top at checkout, it's excluded from revenue entirely since it's collected on behalf of a tax authority, not earned income.

Costs, discounts and refunds

Discounts and refunds are each subtracted exactly once — never compounded. A return is modeled as three separate effects: lost revenue, partially recovered inventory value, and non-refundable processing fees, so the loss from a return isn't overstated or understated.

Contribution versus net estimate

How this is calculated
contributionBeforeAds = netRevenue − variableCosts | contributionAfterAds = contributionBeforeAds − adSpend

Contribution is never labeled net profit — it excludes fixed overhead (software, salaries, rent) by default. Monthly mode additionally subtracts a declared fixed-overhead figure to produce a separate 'net estimate.'

Worked example

$100 revenue, $60 non-ad variable costs: contribution before ads = 100 − 60 = $40. With $15 ad spend: contribution after ads = 40 − 15 = $25.

Break-even advertising

Break-even ROAS = revenue ÷ pre-ad contribution = 100 ÷ 40 = 2.5×. Break-even CPA = pre-ad contribution per order = $40 — the most you could spend acquiring this order before losing money on it.

Contribution ≠ net profit
Excludes fixed overhead outside monthly mode's explicit overhead field.

Questions

Does contribution profit include fixed overhead?

Not in per-order mode. Contribution profit (before or after ads) only accounts for costs that vary with this order — product, fulfillment, fees, ad spend. Fixed overhead like software subscriptions, salaries or rent is only subtracted in monthly mode, where it produces a separate "net estimate" figure that is never labeled as accounting net profit.

How should returned orders be modeled?

This tool separates three parts of a return: revenue that gets refunded (a loss), inventory that may be recovered and resold (partially offsetting the loss, if you set a recovered-inventory fraction below 100%), and payment/platform fees that are often non-refundable even when the sale is reversed (an added loss). Treating a return as simply "minus the sale price" overstates the recovered value and understates the real cost.
